The Centre for Local Business Development (Centre) just completed its HSSE Management System Awards ceremony, celebrating 30 local companies who have completed the programme this year.
Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) in the oil and gas industry is a top priority. With Guyana an oil producer, there is an enormous opportunity to address gaps and ensure HSSE is interwoven into Guyana’s business culture.
The Centre plays an integral role in fostering the development and expansion of a safety culture in Guyana. To match this increased demand, the Centre developed a HSSE Management System Programme in conjunction with members of the oil and gas industry. This programme commenced in July 2019 and has since assisted over 400 businesses to begin their HSSE management system journey.
The programme begins with an initial awareness session, followed by a combination of site visits, creation of documentation and processes, an assessment sessions and follow-up visits. Last year, 25 companies have completed the Management System programme and this year, 30 new companies have completed the programme.
“The Centre would like to congratulate all of the 30 local businesses for not only beginning, but sticking through and completing the programme. The creation of an HSSE Management System in your businesses will not only help you to better compete for contracts in the oil and gas industry, but in other diverse sectors,” commented Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters, Director of the Centre for Local Business Development. She goes on to say, “The safety culture is changing in Guyana, and you have taken the very important step of being a part of that change.”
In attendance and praising the programme through their remarks were Honourable Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works and Honourable Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour.
