The Centre for Local Business Development (Centre) just completed its HSSE Management System 2023 Awards ceremony, celebrating 45 local companies who have completed the programme this year. This brings the total number of companies who have completed the programme since its inception in 2019 to 100.
HSSE is also a very important element in the construction, agriculture, manufacturing, mining sectors and so many other sectors. The Centre plays an integral role in fostering the development and expansion of a safety culture in Guyana through the development of the HSSE Management System Programme. This has helped Guyanese businesses to build their operational capacity in safety management, made their environment a safer place to work, and their employees feel more valued.
“For 100 businesses across Guyana to successfully build a foundational HSSE Management System within the span of four years, inclusive of going through a global pandemic, clearly demonstrates that businesses are embracing a transformational safety culture and we are proud support them through this process,” said Lavonia Springer, QHSSE Manager of the Centre for Local Business Development. “We have seen businesses from Regions 2, 3, 4 and 6 complete this programme; have only 51% 2-9 employees while 30% have over 50 employees. Further, we have business from across a wide cross sector of sectors including construction, aviation, transportation and logistics, fabrication, medical, tourism, and other services.
The HSSE Management System Mentorship Programme takes approximately 6 months for a company to complete it. The programme begins with an initial awareness session, followed by a combination of site visits, creation of documentation and processes, verification of implementation and follow-up visits. In 2021 and 2022, 25 and 30 companies completed programme respectively. The 45 graduating today brings that total to 100 companies.
“The Centre would like to congratulate all of the 45 local businesses being awarded here today. Guyana is still considered a frontier exploration and to see such rapid growth the in the country’s safety culture shows that you are not only a part of a that change, but helping to advance it,” commented Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters, Director of the Centre for Local Business Development.
